Proverbs about Jeju Water

There are a lot of idioms about water in Jeju because unlike the inland with abundant water, people in Jeju formed villages around water. Let’s find out what they are in Jeju dialect and what they mean.

  • ᄂᆞᆾ싯을 때 물 하영 쓰민 저싱가민 그 물 다 먹어사 ᄒᆞᆫ다.
It means that if you use too much water when washing one’s face, you will have to drink all of the water that you used for washing your face when you die as a punishment, highlighting the importance of saving water.
  • 먹는 물에 돌 데(네)끼민 저싱 강 눈썹으로 건져 올려사 ᄒᆞᆫ다.
The meaning is that if you throw a rock and cause it to get muddy, you will have to fetch those rocks from underwater with your eyebrows as a punishment. It shows how precious water was for people in Jeju.
  • 먹는 물에 춤 바끄민 줴 받나
It means that you will be heavily punished if you waste drinking water, which indicates that Jeju people cared deeply about saving water.
