FAQ

Jeju Samdasoo is volcanic filtered water. What is that?

Jeju Samdasoo is Korea’s only bottled water brand of volcanic filtered mineral water. "Volcanic filtered water" refers to groundwater that lies naturally between volcanic rock layers. Jeju Island is a volcanic island formed by long activity between approximately 1.88 million years ago and approximately 5,000 years ago. It is a geological structure in which thin lava layers with an average thickness of 2 to 3m lie on top of one another like a layer cake. Jeju Samdasoo is naturally filtered precipitation that percolates in the Hallasan area for about 18 years, between 1,450m above sea level to 420m underground after flowing through volcanic geological layers.

Is there any risk that the source of Jeju Samdasoo water will be depleted?

Want to know about water depletion?
The answer is there will be no impact. In 2020, the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Development Corporation's water resource research team published two papers on the characteristics of groundwater in the area where Jeju Samdasoo's source water is collected in the Journal of the Korean Society of Water Resources. One of these two papers, "Analysis of groundwater level volatility in the mid-mountainous area of Pyoseon Basin using normalized standard deviation and cross-correlation coefficient," published in the May 2020 issue, was based on groundwater level data collected over 2 decades at nine monitoring points around sources of Jeju Samdasoo water. The study revealed that water collected for Jeju Samdasoo does not affect the groundwater level in the surrounding area, but does undergo changes according to the levels of natural rainfall. Of the 4 billion tons of annual precipitation, 1.64 billion tons flows into groundwater. The annual volume of water permitted for Jeju Samdasoo is 0.1%, or 1.66 million tons per year (4,600 tons per day).

When does Jeju Samdasoo expire?

The shelf life of Jeju Samdasoo is 24 months. This is the longest for domestic bottled water brands, which vary between 6 and 24 months. Shelf life is determined by the Drinking Water Management Act, and Jeju Samdasoo is in compliance with the Ministry of Environment's "Notice on Standards, Specifications and Labeling Standards for Spring Water, etc." The general expiration date for spring water is to be 6 months from the date of bottling, but this can be extended if an inspection report that scientifically proves that there is no change in quality is issued by an authorized water quality inspection agency at home or abroad, such as from the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Development Corporation or the Korea Water Research Institute, and approved by the Special Metropolitan City Mayor, Metropolitan City Mayor, Special Self-Governing City Mayor, Do governor, or Special Self-Governing Province Governor. The shelf life is extended every 6 months and there is no limit to the extension.

Does Jeju Samdasoo water come from a single water source?

'Water supplied from a single water source.
Jeju Samdasoo is Korea’s only drinking water produced from a single source, which guarantees uncompromising quality and taste no matter where you purchase it from.
Up to 4,600 tons of groundwater can be drawn each day from the Jeju Samdasoo water source, located in the mid-mountainous area of Gyorae-ri, Jocheon-eup, Jeju. In order to protect the water source, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Development Corporation has been purchasing land around the source since 1996, meaning that an area of approximately 720,000 m2 is now under its direct control. This is 2.4 times the area of Marado Island. A network of 106 monitoring centers are installed around the water source to comprehensively monitor groundwater levels, water intake, river outflow, water quality, and soil conditions in real time.

What is the average age of Jeju Samdasoo?

The average age of Jeju Samdasoo is 18 years.
In cooperation with the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province measured the ages of 34 areas of groundwater and spring water on Jeju Island in 2000, which revealed that the average age of Jeju Samdasoo was 18 years. This is because it takes about 18 years for the rainwater that falls on Jeju to be filtered by volcanic bedrock and settle 420m underground. The average age of Jeju’s groundwater is 22 years old. This actually differs by region, with groundwater in the southern area 5 to 10 years old, in the eastern area 20 to 25 years old, and the western area 50 to 60 years old. In the southern region, groundwater is relatively young due to the steep slopes and the resulting higher flow velocity, while in the western region, groundwater movement is slow due to the relatively low permeability of underground strata, which means the groundwater is generally older.

How should I store Jeju Samdasoo?

Tips on storing Jeju Samdasoo
Keep it sealed and in a cool place away from direct sunlight to prevent it from going stale.
Once opened, the taste of water in plastic bottles changes slowly due to organic matter in the source water coming into contact again with outside air. Drinking directly from the bottle means that saliva and food particles will enter the water, leading to bacterial growth, so we recommend drinking from a cup. Leaving the bottle with the cap off in the car will also mean the sunlight and heat will cause the water to go stale quicker. Avoid leaving your bottle of Jeju Samdasoo outdoors or unattended, especially in the summer.

How can I see product information on your label-free packaging?

As individual sales of label-free products began to be permitted in 2023, Jeju Samdasoo introduced QR codes so people can see the product information in a convenient manner. Simply scan the QR code anytime on the caps of any of the three types of Jeju Samdasoo bottles available: 330 mL, 500 mL, and 2 L.
Product information can also be viewed on the Jeju Samdasoo home delivery app.

Is Jeju Samdasoo safe from environmental hormones?

Controversy over the detection of environmental hormones continues to arise due to substances used as plasticizers and coating agents in plastic containers (phthalates, bisphenol A, etc.). However, these substances are never used in the manufacture of Samdasoo containers and PET molding, meaning there is no risk of them appearing in Jeju Samdasoo water.

Is Jeju Samdasoo safe from microorganisms?

Jeju Samdasoo samples products from each line every day and performs self-analysis, regularly requesting analysis from a certified agency at least once a quarter to ensure our products are free from harmful microorganisms. Rehydrate worry-free.

What is Jeju Samdasoo doing for the environment?

Jeju Samdasoo participates in addressing issues related to plastic use with its development of green products, lightweighting and creating a virtuous cycle for resources under its key “Green Whole Process” strategy, which is Korea’s only green business model. We aim to reduce our plastic use and greenhouse gas emissions by 50% each by 2030. To this end, we've launched "Label-free Samdasoo Green" in conjunction with our "5R" strategy—Reduce, Recycle, Replace, Redesign and Renovate—and have developed a "cr-pet" Samdasoo ribbon that applies the "Bottle to Bottle" method of reproducing recycled PET bottles. The "Bottle to Bottle" method refers to a system where a consumer of Samdasoo throws away the Samdasoo bottles for recycling, which are recovered, crushed, and recycled into raw materials. These raw materials are reborn as Jeju Samdasoo’s plastic bottles that are then returned to the consumer. In a nutshell, the market and customers are working together to sustain a plastic circulation structure.
